 Disposing of used engine oil.

If you change the oil in your car yourself, what did you do with the old oil?  Pour it away down a drain?  Seal it and put it in the garage?
There are many dangerous products than can harm our environment, especially our water supply. Used motor oil is one of them. It can cause ground contamination if poured in your yard that can lead to water contamination, just as easy as disposing of the motor oil in a water body such as a river.  It's actually an arrest able offence to dispose of oil in the public sewerage system.

Once the oil is drained into a suitable container, bring it to South Star Chrysler and we will allow you to dump your oil into our storage tank. One of the efforts we make to be an environmentally friendly business is to burn used motor to heat our service and detail departments.

In the state of Kansas, used oil is not regulated as a hazardous waste if it is recycled or burned as a fuel. This means that your used oil, if not mixed or contaminated with hazardous waste, can be managed under the used oil regulations.  Some examples of used oil include used engine oil, lubricating oil, gear oil, transmission fluid and hydraulic fluid.

In the State of Kansas it is legal to transport used oil that is generated on site, or collected from "do-it-yourselfers", provided that the transporter uses their own vehicle and transports no more than 55 gallons at any time.

It is illegal to dispose of used oil improperly. Note the following important restrictions:
* Do not use used oil as a pesticide carrier, sealant, coating, or for any other similar purpose.
* Do not discharge used oil into sewers, storm drainage systems, surface or groundwater, or by deposit on or under land.
* Do not discharge used oil to septic tanks.
* Do not dispose of used oil in landfills or mix used oil with wastes that will be disposed of in landfills.
* Do not mix used oil with gasoline or cleaning solvents.  The resulting mixture may be a hazardous waste.
* Do not use used oil for road oiling, dust control, weed control or for similar purposes.
